Connect "Happy Land" to Happy Hill with the Lewisville Branch Library
What connections can be found between the history of Winston-Salem and the story told in Happy Land?
Join us as Martha Hartley, director of Moravian research at Old Salem Museums & Gardens, presents the history of the Happy Hill neighborhood from its beginnings as a home for slaves on a farm in the 19th century to the thriving African American neighborhood it became in the 1920s, and the historic cemetery that remains today.
This program offers an opportunity to explore our own local history and consider the ways history, memory, and place shape the stories we tell. This program complements our 2026 On the Same Page selection, Happy Land by Dolen Perkins-Valdez.
